Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday. It is celebrated throughout Central and Southern Mexico., and other people of Mexican ancestry. People gather together to pray for family and friends who have died to support their spiritual journey. Most commonly people go to the cemetery. It is a 2 day event that starts on November 1st and ends November 2nd. It was first started in the 16th century at the beginning of the summer, but was later associated with Halloween. Family and friends bring marigolds, skulls, and other items the person enjoyed. They also bring pictures of the person who has died. This is called the ofrenda or offering. Sometimes people wear shells on their clothes so that when they dance it will wake up the dead. On day of the dead family members believe their loved one will return for one night to visit.
I chose to celebrate my dog Zeus. He passed away in 2014. I chose to do Zeus because he was my favorite dog. The items I chose to put on my alter were bones, pumpkins, leaves and candles. Creating the alter was one of my favorite exhibitions to do this year. I enjoy designing things so that's why I enjoyed making the alter. Exhibiting the alter was very fun because it looked really good and I liked showing it off to people.
I learned a lot from this project. I learned about what people put on their alters. I learned about a lot of the history of day of the dead, and the tradition of Day of the dead. I think this project went really well I felt great about this project and I really enjoyed doing it. One thing I liked about this project was we didn't have to wear professional dress and that made me feel less nervous.
